“Diversity and Inclusion of SOGI: Toward a Society Where Everyone Can Live True to Themselves”

Outline

On July 2, 2024, in commemoration of June Pride Month, the University of Tokyo’s Center for Coproduction of Inclusion, Diversity and Equity (IncluDE) and the Dining Lab at the University of Tokyo’s Institute of Industrial Science hosted a networking event, “Diversity and Inclusion in SOGI: Toward a Society Where Everyone Can Live as They Are”.

In order for society as a whole to become a place where everyone can live their own lives no matter what SOGI identity they have, it is essential not only for each sector to develop their own initiatives, but also for different sectors to connect with each other, learn from each other, and work in hand to move forward together. The event brought together a variety of actors, including universities, companies, and NGOs, in order to provide an opportunity to take further steps toward inclusion of diverse SOGI.

The day featured presentations on distinctive initiatives for inclusion of diverse SOGI, not only at the University of Tokyo, but also at Ochanomizu University, Hitotsubashi University, and Tsukuba University.

In the panel discussion, Mr. Gon Matsunaka, Representative of Good Aging Ales, a certified NPO, and Ms. Nahoko Hori, Senior Consultant, Mizuho Research & Technologies, were invited as panelists to discuss specific initiatives on the theme of the D&I building (tentative) to be constructed in 2026, together with Teruo Fujii, President of the University of Tokyo.

Afterwards, as an opportunity to connect with each other and deepen relationships, a relay talk was held on the initiatives of each participant, followed by a social gathering while enjoying food and beverages prepared by Dining Lab.

The space for leaflets and other materials to introduce initiatives of participants was also actively utilized, providing an opportunity to visualize a wide variety of activities.

We will continue our efforts to make IncluDE a platform for solidarity toward a better future.
