On October 24, 1975, 90 percent of Icelandic women stopped working, cooking, and doing household chores in an unprecedented nationwide movement known as “The Day Off.” This historic day became a turning point that eventually led Iceland to rank No. 1 in the Global Gender Gap Index for 16 consecutive years, establishing the country as a world leader in gender equality.
The Day Iceland Stood Still, a documentary revisiting this transformative moment, will be released in theaters across Japan on October 25. Prior to the nationwide release, we are pleased to host a special advance screening at the University of Tokyo, followed by a talk and dialogue event with Jón Gnarr, Chair of the Future Committee of Iceland, on the theme “How can we change?”
